Tool’s progressive metal masterpiece, Lateralus, is one of the most notable metal albums in the early 2000s. Listening to the album in its entirety is the way to go when it comes to Lateralus. The songs rolling into one another provides an unearthly listening experience.

After my initial listen, I discovered a newfound respect for metal music. Most perceive metal as screaming and uninspired power chords, but Lateralus taught me there is so much more to metal music.

The interesting thing about Tool’s Lateralus is that the album does not make you feel anger or rage (often associated with most metal) instead it brings you on a ride of flowing thoughts and fleeting feelings. The tone of each song can quickly shift from relaxing to exciting.

A few songs worth mentioning on the album: “The Patient” and “Parabola”. “The Patient” starts so solemn with sudden bursts of heavy metal. It is a song that I truly love and is probably up there with my favorites.

I then decided to take some more time and really tried to understand my feelings toward Tool’s Lateralus through another listen. This time around I recognized how elaborate each song is. Each listen unpacks a new part of the song that I can now appreciate.

In conclusion even if you are not into metal I highly recommend checking it out. Give it a chance I bet you will be surprised.
