Continuing our Oscar predictions, we will discuss the technical awards, foreign films, and documentaries that are nominated this year.

The award for Best Foreign Film will got to “A Fantastic Woman.” Chile’s entry for the Academy stars Daniela Vega as a transgender nightclub singer and waitress struggling against stereotypes in a culturally significant film.

The award for Best Live Action Short Film will go to “Dekalb Elementary” and its story of a thwarted school shooting. Unfortunately, in the wake of the recent tragedy in Parkland, this short film has the most immediacy out of the group.

The award for Best Documentary will go to “Jane.” The documentary tells the story of conservationist Jane Goodall and her work with primates. It is the least controversial out of the group, unlike “Icarus” in its story of Russian doping during the Olympics.

The award for Best Short Subject Documentary goes to “Heroin(e)”  for its documentation of the opioid crisis in the small American town of Huntington, Virginia.

The award for Best Original Score will go to Alexandre Desplat for his work on “The Shape of Water.” Desplat’s score does so much for this film, and creates an undeniably beautiful atmosphere that could easily become unsettling without a good score.

The award for Best Original Song will go to “Remember Me” from “Coco.” It is a genuinely sweet song, and it has more importance over “The Greatest Showman” tracks that have received negative reviews for their simplicity and bland lyrics. “Remember Me” matches its movie better and it comes from a more Academy-friendly film.

The award for Best Film Editing will go to “Dunkirk.” A film with three interconnected stories over different time spans is quite a thing to behold.

The award for Best Sound Editing will go to “Dunkirk.” Sound editing is a relatively unknown category, but it deals with the way sound enhances a film, and “Dunkirk” does sound editing with ease. Whether it is the sound of airplanes or explosions, all of the moments are heightened by Hans Zimmer’s score expertly weaved throughout it.

The award for Best Sound Mixing will go to “Baby Driver.” No film has incorporated music into a story so well, since Scorsese’s “Goodfellas.”

The award for Best Makeup and Styling will go to “The Darkest Hour.” One can simply look at all the makeup they put on Gary Oldman to transform him into Winston Churchill.

The award for Best Costume Design will go to “Phantom Thread.” This film is about costume designers at the top of their game. The dresses in the film are visually dazzling to watch as the characters walk around in carefully calculated fashion.

The award for Best Visual Effects will and should go to “Blade Runner 2049.” Anybody who has seen this critically acclaimed movie will point out how beautiful the film is, but also visual effects are in moments that are small and not as overt to create a full world.
