Democrats are pushing Trump to reopen the government. President Donald Trump partially shut down the government due to the Democrats fighting against the five billion dollar wall that Trump wants to build. USA Today writes, “The partial government shutdown over funding for a border wall reached a milestone Sunday, now tying for the third longest on record without any end in sight because of bitter negotiations.”

This government shutdown has the potential to be the longest shutdown in U.S. history, considering how the negotiations are holding up. In the 2016 Presidential Election, Trump’s campaign slogan was “Make America Great Again.” One of the ways he will do so is by building the border wall. Trump posts a message on Twitter, saying, “I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I’ll have Mexico pay for that wall.”

Democrats believe that the wall is an inefficient use of money and resources. The Democrats are taking a different approach to border security with improved technology to monitor the border such as drones and tunnel detection. On Jan. 10th, at 2:30, President Trump arrived in McAllen, Texas, to visit Former Acting ICE Director, Tom Homan, and Border Patrol Officials to talk about border security and control. According to Fox News, Homan said, “President Trump is not going to give in on the issue of the border wall.”

Democrats will not budge, as they do not believe that border security is as serious as Trump believes it is. As the shut down is nearing the end of week three, The New York Times asked President Trump about how he will convince the Democrats to receive the necessary funds to build the wall. “As he headed to the border, President Trump said, ‘if I have to, I will’ bypass Congress to fund the wall, claiming that Mexico would pay for it indirectly. ‘Obviously, they’re not going to write a check,’ he said.”

From the sound of it, President Trump will make U.S. history by putting the United States under a “State of Emergency” so that Trump can bypass Congress to build the wall. Trump must take into consideration the legal trouble he will get himself into if this is the path he chooses to go down.
