Darius Garland has officially committed to Vanderbilt University. This is a massive sign for Coach Bryce Drew and the Commodores. Garland, number 11 on the ESPN 100, has averaged 23.4 points and 3.9 rebounds for Brentwood Academy. Garland joins four-star small forward Aaron Nesmith for the Vanderbilt incoming class thus far.

For Coach Drew, this means he has finally signed his first big name for the 2018 class. With players like Simi Shiitu (number 6 on the ESPN 100), Romeo Langford (number 5), and Bol Bol (number 4) still unsigned. Landing Garland gives Vanderbilt a very attractive piece that these players would want to join.

Coach Drew had to sign Garland especially since he is a hometown kid. If he let him slip between his fingers, it could lead to Vandy having another mediocre recruiting class. Now the Commodores need to turn all of their focus towards Simi Shittu. Shittu, the 6-foot-9-inch power forward from Ontario, Canada, has averaged 20 points and 9.9 rebounds for Vermont Academy. The Commodores have a glaring need for rebounding, and since Bol Bol is still up in the air and taking his time, they need to sign Shittu as soon as possible, as many reports have indicated that Vanderbilt is his top choice.

Vanderbilt basketball seems to be on the rise, but the Commodores still need one or two more players in order to compete with the likes of Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference and make a run in the tournament.
