The United States curling team pulled off a huge upset when it beat defending gold medalists Canada in the Olympic semifinals. Just a few days later the team would again shock the sports world with an even bigger win.

Sweden’s curling team is one of top rated teams in the world, with many predicting they would take home gold before the Pyeongchang Olympics began. Team USA’s curling success has been very minimal, their last medal coming in the 1998 Winter Olympics when they won bronze. Their chances against Sweden were small to say the least, considering they lost 10-4 in this year’s group stages.

35-year-old curling veteran John Shuster was dropped from the national team after disappointing performances in the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics. Shuster responded by losing 35 pounds and starting up his own team. The team soon earned the title “The Rejects.” Shuster united with Tyler George, John Landsteiner, Matt Hamilton, and Joe Polo to form Team USA.

Before the 2018 Winter Olympics, Team USA was ranked 13th in the world. They were longshots and underdogs and started slow in this year’s Games. They then found themselves winning four consecutive matches, including a major 5-3 upset of Canada in the semifinals.

Prior to Sweden’s matchup with the Americans, Shuster spoke highly of the Swedes saying, “They’re a fantastic curling team… We’re going to have some fun and put on a show, and may the best team win.”

Team USA and Sweden were locked at 5 after seven ends. The U.S. curlers responded by scoring 5 in the eighth end. Sweden achieved a double to close the score at 10-7, but that would be the Swedes’ last opportunity.

“The Rejects are Olympic champions. Call it the Miracurl on Ice,” said USA Today. Shuster and his underdog curlers did the unthinkable defeating the mighty Swedes, winning the gold medal for the United States.
