The Vanderbilt Men’s basketball team is a lot better than last year’s team. This is partially credited to bringing in star freshman point guard, Darius Garland, and star freshman forward, Simisola Shittu. Vanderbilt has a great season going right now, currently holding a 5-1 record on the season. The Commodores are ranked 4th in the SEC behind Kentucky, LSU, and Arkansas.

Though the Commodores are off to a great start, they just lost their star freshman Darius Garland to a torn meniscus. He is out for the rest of the season. Garland got hurt in the first two minutes of their loss to Kent state last week. Last Monday, Garland put up 33 points in their win against Liberty, which is the second-most points scored by any player in Vanderbilt basketball history. Before he got hurt, Garland was the leading scorer for the Commodores with 16.2 points per game. Despite his injury, Garland will still potentially be a high first round draft pick. The Commodores hope to get another season with Garland, which depends on him either going to the draft or staying at Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt is going to have to move past this and go on with the rest of their season, focusing on their team getting better without Garland. The Commodores will now have to depend more on their freshman star forward Simisola Shittu. Simi Shittu is a five star recruit out of high school who decided to team up with Garland when picking where he wanted to go to college. Shittu is a great player and is averaging 16 points and 8 rebounds per game. Shittu will probably get more touches now that Garland is out and will be the center focus of the Vanderbilt basketball team. The Commodores should still have a good season without Garland if they can find a replacement for him. Their overall goal is to make the NCAA tournament, and they can do that if they are able to beat all the right teams.
