As mounds of snow gathered on the sidewalk outside, a heated tension was gathering inside of Pope John Paul II High School. It was the day after Thanksgiving, and a storm had been brewing. Just one week earlier, Headmaster Faustin Weber and armory director Eve Abdo stood hand in hand on the stage during assembly to announce the coupling of Black Friday with the JPII Armory sales.

The week progressed, and excitement built up. Work crews were seen sneaking into the side entrance of the building- supposedly with thousands of dollars worth of JPII merchandise. Soon it would be half off.

Although school was out for Thanksgiving Break, students returned from all parts of the country to get their share of what the armory was offering. On Friday morning, a police helicopter was seen circling above the school in preparation for any possible fights that could break out between the students. Tis the season.

At 6:00 a.m. it was planned for the administration to open the gates from the academic wing and let the students in towards the armory. They were not prepared for what waited behind that gate. A huge gathering of students had formed, some of whom were clinging to the gate with crazed looks on their faces. Many stood in the background, backed all the way to the opposite end of the hallway and to the stairwell.

As the gate rose, the stampede of students were on their way to get doorbusters and special deals. Disaster struck as one freshman ran through the glass window beside the door, shattering it. Another student pulled the fire alarm in an attempt to distract everyone from the prizes.

After the armory was ravaged, the crowd of crazed shoppers moved on to the Round Table. The unexpecting cafeteria staff were busy cooking a small lunch for the administration when a loud pop was heard in the distance. One cook looked up as another screamed. Three students were waiting outside with a twisted coat hanger, in the process of unlocking the door to the kitchen. Before the staff could react, the shoppers were upon them. Within minutes, every food item in the kitchen was gone.

At the end of the day, JPII was left to rebuild what Black Friday had taken from it, and they vowed it would never happen again.
