Sawyer Watts is a JPII sophomore who plays football and baseball. This past weekend Sawyer had a chance to go to Cary, North Carolina, to compete at the USA Baseball tournament, where he represented the 16U southeast team in an effort to be named the national team roster next year. The Herald On The Hill asked Sawyer a few questions about his weekend.

The Herald on the Hill: How was the USA baseball tournament?

Sawyer: It was a humbling experience, outstanding competition. The players were amazing down there, and so were the coaches. I can’t complain a single bit about it. I enjoyed every single bit of it. I learned a lot of things from this experience to put into my game now.

Herald: How did your team do down there?

Sawyer: We did very well. Our first game was the most challenging game of the tournament against Ohio Valley, who had six Division I commits for pitching and fielding. The pitcher that we faced is committed to Vanderbilt, and he was throwing about 88-89 miles per hour consistently throughout the whole game. But our team found a way to win and fought hard, winning in extra innings. Then, overall we continued to take that momentum, won the championship, and got the gold medal.

Herald: How do you feel like you did individually?

Sawyer: I did very well. I was put into positions by my coaches and teammates to where I could succeed. I hit .333 overall and had no errors, so I thought I had a very successful weekend with the team.

Herald: How does your performance at this tournament help you make the national team next year?

Sawyer: Well, I don’t know if I am going to make the national team. They are going to choose the top 15 players out of this whole tournament, so we will see. But I really hope so. I did all that I could, and now it’s all up to the coaches. If I do make the national team, I will be very humbled and fortunate to be among that elite group of players.
